Military Aircraft Wrecks of Arizona, California and the Southwest. WWII Plane Crashes Visit Crash Sites Faded Contrails Book History of Crashes in Arizona and the Southwest Newspaper Stories Airfield Collectibles Military Aircraft Wrecks in Arizona, California and the Southwest, WWII- 1970’s With ideal climate and sparsely populated regions, Arizona and the Southwestern states were used extensively to train Air Force and Navy pilots. The height of training lasted from World War II- 1970’s. With the many airbases training thousands of pilots came a high number of accidents. There were over 500 mishaps in Arizona during WWII, with an additional 600 by the end of the 1960’s. Fortunately, many of the pilots and aircrews were able to bail out in time, but tragically, some did not. As an avid hiker and vintage military aircraft historian, I enjoy exploring the remote deserts and rugged mountains searching for these lost aircraft and researching the stories of the planes and their crew. |
